This was another game in which Carlton was nothing short of brilliant yet had no run support and ended up with a no decision. Pete Rose broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the twelfth inning, with a solo home run off Chris Short, as the Reds beat the Phillies, 2-1.
The only run Carlton allowed was unearned. It came in the top of the first, with two out. Bobby Tolan singled, then Johnny Bench reached on a two-base error by Greg Luzinski. That scored Tolan with the Reds first run. Philadelphia tied it in the seventh, when John Bateman doubled in Deron Johnson.
Carlton had a season high fifteen strikeouts in the loss.
