Steve Carlton pitched one of his best games of the year, nursing a 1-0 lead over a full nine innings, to nab his third shutout win. He joins the exclusive, one hit shutout club. It was a badly needed victory, as the Phillies had lost in Steve’s last three starts. Philadelphia’s lone run came in the top of the third. Deron Johnson and John Bateman both singled, putting runners on first and third. Carlton came to the plate, with the infield back, willing to sacrifice a run in exchange for a double play. That’s exactly what happened. Cincinnati starter, Jim McGlothin pitched a whale of a game himself. He allowed just the one run, on three hits. This whole game, despite how well Carlton was pitching, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop, mainly due to how poor the Phillies offense is.
