For the first time this year, Steve Carlton has pitched back-to-back shutouts. On the heels of a 4-0 whitewash against the Atlanta Braves, he blanked the Cardinals, 1-0, in a tight pitcher’s duel against Al Santorini.
The game’s only run came in the bottom of the first inning. Denny Doyle led off with a single, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Larry Bowa, then scored on a Tom Hutton base hit.
The Phillies left some chances on the basepaths. In the fourth, Greg Luzinski tripled with two outs and was stranded. In the sixth, Willie Montanez poked a one out double and could not score.
Santorini had a fine game in his own right. He pitched eight innings, allowing just the one run on six hits. He fanned seven and did not walk a single batter.
