Steve Carlton reached the twenty-win plateau, with a 3 to 1 victory over the New York Mets. After a bit of a slump from late July to mid-August, Lefty has been hotter than a pistol, pitching five straight complete game wins. Three of those were shutouts. In this game, Tommie Agee hit Carlton’s first pitch out of the park to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Larry Bowa singled in a run in the third to tie the game. The Phillies would add a run in the seventh and eighth, including a home run from Roger Freed, to clinch the win. In real life, Carlton lost this game. In the replay, Steve sits three behind in the win column but is two ahead in the loss column.
