Carlton finally lost, after winning his previous five starts. He dropped a 3-2 decision to Mike Torrez and the Montreal Expos at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Home runs accounted for all the game’s scoring. The Phillies’ Willie Montanez hit a two-run blast in the bottom of the first, giving them the early lead. Ken Singleton’s solo blast in the second cut the deficit in half. Montreal would take the lead for good on Bob Bailey’s two run clout in the sixth. Carlton has now surrendered 22 gopher balls this season.
