The Braves won, 5 to 4, but Greg Maddux missed a golden opportunity to get a shutout. He took a 3 to 0 lead into the top of the ninth inning, but then, things went quickly south. Eric Young drew a walk to start things off. Walt Weiss then reached on a crucial error by Jeff Blauser. A single by Larry Walker drove in Young and spoiled the shutout. Maddux was lifted for Mark Wohlers, who promptly allowed a rbi single to Andres Galarraga. Joe Girardi struck out, but Mike Kingery and Vinnie Castilla each followed with base hits, to give Colorado a 4 to 3 lead.
Castilla returned the favor in the bottom of the ninth by committing an error off the bat of Charley O’ Brien. Mark Lemke flew out, But Ryan Klesko pinch hit for Borbon and stroked a double. Marquis Grissom lined out to third, but Blauser went from goat to hero, with a two run, game winning single.
