After a long string of victories in Maddux starts, the Braves dropped a 4-2 decision to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
Greg was able to escape with a no-decision, but he was not sharp at all. Things looked promising at the start, as he retired the first six batters he faced, and Atlanta led 2-0 heading into the third. However, Maddox allowed a run in the third and also in the fourth and was in trouble every inning after the second. He left after six innings, with the score tied, 2-2. A two-run homer by Bernard Gilkey, in the seventh, proved to be the coup de grace.
It should be noted that Maddux missed his start between August 9th and this game, due to a bout with the flu.
