Greg Maddux took a 3-0 lead into the top of the fifth but then gave up a double to Rickey Guitierrez and then a single to Rick Wilkins. At that point, an error by Braves’ second baseman, Mark Lemke, allowed both runs to score. Atlanta answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, eventually holding off the Astros, 5 to 3.

The unearned runs were of course, not charged to Maddux, but he was only able to go six innings in this game. He did get credit for his sixteenth win.
