Greg Maddux joined the elite, 1-hit shutout club, by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 1-0, at Atlanta. It was Maddux’s tenth whitewash of the year, his only hit allowed, was a double by David Bell, in the fifth inning. Mad Dog fanned ten, the only blemish on his pitching performance was the fact that he walked five Cardinals. Fortunately for him, none of those free passes came around to score.

Tom Urbani was the tough luck loser for St. Louis. He allowed the Braves lone run in the bottom of the fifth, when Marquis Grissom walked and stole second. Mark Lemke then doubled him in.
