Brooklyn scored a run in the bottom of the first and Dazzy Vance held the Cubs at bay until the top of the seventh. That’s when Gabby Harnett belted a two-run home run, allowing Chicago to take a 2-1 lead. Vance was replaced by Dutch Ruether, who retired the Cubs in order in the top of the eighth. Zack Wheat singled and scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Chicago made the decision to allow pitcher, George Milstead to bat. He was able to draw a leadoff walk. Jigger Stantz then sacrifice him to second base. George Grantham pinch hit and singled, advancing Milstead to third. Sparky Adams then lifted a deep fly ball, for the sacrifice fly that would eventually end the game.
