1970 Great Eight League

Recap: through eight games played

To this point, the Boston Red Sox are the class of the league, with a 7 and 1 record, having won six in a row. Right behind is a 6 and 2, Cincinnati Reds team, with Johnny Bench making an early bid for MVP honors. Bench leads the league in batting average, hits, runs, runs batted in and is tied for the lead in home runs. Following are the middle of the pack, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates are all tied at 3 and 5. The Oakland Athletics are the tail enders, at 2 and 6. The top pitching highlight thus far, was Pittsburgh’s Bob Veale pitching a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics in game #3. It was unusual, in that Veale gave up an unearned run. In the top of the third, with two out, Blue Moon Odom drew a walk, then Willie Stargell committed a three-base error, allowing Oakland their lone run. Veale struck out nine and walked two, in the gem.
