Boston 6 Los Angeles 4
WP- Mike Nagy (2-0) LP- Joe Moeller (0-2)
HR- Carl Yastrzemski (3), Billy Conigliaro (4); Manny Mota (1), Von Joshua (1)
Boston got out to a big lead early, then held off a scrappy Dodgers team, in a 6 to 4 win. Each team had two home runs in Dodger Stadium, a park not really known for the long ball. Red Sox starter, Mike Nagy certainly helped his own cause, not only getting the win on the mound, but stroking three singles at the plate.
Cincinnati 2 Baltimore 1
WP- Wayne Simpson (1-1) LP- Tom Phoebus (0-1) SV- Wayne Granger (1)
HR- Merv Rettenmund (1)
Cincinnati was able to hold off Baltimore, 2 to 1, in a low scoring pitching battle. Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Pete Rose led off for the Reds. He drew a walk and stole second base off Phoebus. Rose advanced to third on a Bernie Carbo groundout, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Perez. The Orioles lone run came via a solo home run by Merv Rettenmund. The Reds scored what would be the eventual winning run in the top of the second. Bobby Tolan singled, stole second and scored on Dave Concepcion’s double.
Oakland 1 New York 2
WP- Ron Klimkowski (1-1) LP-Diego Segui (1-1) SV-Jack Aker (1)
Diego Segui was on the verge of pitching a one-hit shutout against the Yankees, but an ugly eighth inning turned things upside down. Thurman Munson led off the eighth with a single. Ron Lytle popped out to first, but Gene Michael and Jerry Kenny drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases. Segui was lifted for Jim Roland, who promptly threw a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1. John Ellis pinch hit and was able to score Michael with the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly. Jack Aker came in for the Yankees to notch the save.
Pittsburgh 2 Minnesota 3 Eleven innings
WP- Stan Williams (1-0) LP- Dave Giusti (0-2)
HR- Harmon Killebrew (2)
An error by Pittsburgh’s Jose Pagan allowed Minnesota’s George Mitterwald to trot home with the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning, as the Twins beat the Pirates, 3 to 2. Bucs reliever, Dave Giusti had worked the ninth and tenth innings but began the eleventh by walking Mitterwald. Danny Thompson pinch hit for Leo Cardenas and singled. Pagan muffed the relay from the outfield and a hustling Mitterwald was able to score.
