WP- Steve Kline (3-0) LP- Wayne Simpson (1-2) SV- John Aker (3)
HR- John Ellis (1)
Three Yankee pitchers combined to shutout the Cincinnati Reds, 3 to 0, no small feat against a formidable lineup. Steve Kline worked the bulk of the game, going seven innings to get the win. Lindy McDaniel and Jack Aker pitched an inning each. Bobby Murcer was hit by a pitch in the first inning and left the game. He was replaced by Ron Lytle, who had a single, double and also walked.
Los Angeles 2 Minnesota 3
WP- Steve Barber (3-0) LP- Jim Brewer (1-2)
Minnesota’s Tony Oliva was the star here. He drove in all three of the Twins runs, including the game winner in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Pittsburgh 6 Baltimore 7
WP- Dave Leonhard (1-1) LP- Gene Garber (2-1)
HR- Gene Alley (2), Al Oliver (3), Jose Pagan (1); Davey Johnson
This was the wildest of the four games today. Baltimore led, seven to two, heading into the top of the ninth. The Orioles had Jim Hardin make a spot start in this game, replacing #4-man, Tom Phoebus. Hardin worked seven innings, then Dave Leonhard took over and pitched the eighth. That’s the inning in which the Orioles got their seventh run. In the top of the ninth, Dick Hall replaced Leonhard. He gave up a leadoff homer to Al Oliver, then retired Bob Robertson on a groundout. Richie Hebner singled and Dave Cash walked. Hall got Gene Alley to line out to second base. Jose Pagan pinch hit for Gene Garber and made things real interesting with a three-run, pinch-hit home run. The drama continued as Eddie Watt relieved Hall. He walked Manny Sanguillen, then threw a wild pitch, putting the tying run in scoring position. Johnny Jeter pinch hit for Matty Alou, who had gone 0-4 in the game. Jeter grounded out to Davey Johnson to end a 7 to 6, Orioles nailbiter.
