August 5th New York 7 Detroit 6
The Tigers were edged by the Yankees, 7-6, as a result of a poor relief effort from Juan Berenguer(7-6) and a big two base error by Chet Lemon.
The Tiger centerfielder’s miscue off the bat of Butch Wynegar in the bottom of the second led to four unearned runs against starter, Matt Wilcox. Detroit led 6-4 after six innings, aided by homers from Lance Parrish and Lemon, who each hit their team leading thirteenth apiece.
However, Berenguer stumbled out of the bullpen, allowing a single to Andre Robertson and a walk to Willie Randolph, before Dave Winfield stroked a two run double. Graig Nettles then singled to add the third Yankee run of the inning.
Of course, the Orioles won to gain a full game on our Bengals.
