1949 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

July 21. Gm# 83 Ebbets Field Brooklyn 4 Pittsburgh 3 10 innings

HOMERS BY BROOKLYN TIE IT IN 9TH, WIN IT IN 10TH!

Well this one was a gut wrencher. Pittsburgh was two outs away from a 3-2 win, when Duke Snider belted his second home run of the game, to send it into extra innings.

In the bottom of the tenth, Bill Werle(3-10), who has sucked, whether starting or relieving, faced Carl Furillo. The Dodger right fielder parked the first pitch in the seats for a 4-3 Brooklyn win over our Buccos.

The Dodger homers offset long balls by Ralph Kiner(36) and Ed Stevens(6). Curiously, Kiner’s home run off Carl Erskine was the first one he’s hit in the fourth inning all year.

The Pirates now head to Boston to battle the Braves.

National League scores: St. Louis 3 Boston 1; New York 9 Cincinnati 5; Philadelphia 8 Chicago 4.
