PIRATES-REDS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER IN CINCINNATI

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati each took a game in yesterday’s doubleheader at Crosley Field.

Vic Lombardi(6-6) tossed three innings of scoreless relief, as the Pirates won the first game, by a score of 7-5.

Ed Stevens belted a pair of triples, while Wally Westlake, Monty Basgall and starting pitcher, Bob Chesnes, each had two hits.

The Reds got their revenge in game two, thanks to a game winning home run by Lloyd Merriman in the bottom of the ninth, to give the Reds the 4-3 win.

Tiny Bonham(6-5) gave up the game winning clout. Ed Stevens homered for Pittsburgh, his (9th) of the year.

There are no National League games scheduled for tomorrow, Sept 26. The Pirates will return to Forbes Field to take on the St. Louis Cardinals, who have clinched the N.L. pennant, in a three game series.
