1949 Boston Red Sox Replay

June 12. Gm#’s 49-50. Comiskey Park Boston 7, 7 Chicago 2,5

BOSOX WIN TWICE, YANKS LOSE TWICE; DOBSON OUT FOR AT LEAST A MONTH

The Boston Red Sox swept a double header from the Chicago White Sox, winning 7-2 and then 7-5.

Couple this with Cleveland taking two from New York, and the news couldn’t be much better. Except that it could. Boston pitcher, Joe Dobson, injured his oblique muscle while batting in the top of the fourth inning. A hard swing resulting in a pop up to the catcher caused Dobson to double over in pain. Joe left the game immediately and was replaced by Frank Quinn.

Dobson will miss at least a month, probably six starts. His spot in the rotation will be taken by Walt Masterson.

Quinn(5-0) picked up the victory in relief, with five innings of allowing just one run on three hits. Pesky(2) popped his second home run of the season.

Sloppy fielding sure didn’t help the White Sox cause, they committed three in each game.

In the second game, Ted Williams(17) clubbed his team leading, seventeenth, a three run blast in the top of the seventh.

Chuck Stobbs started, but Earl Johnson(2-3) was the real hero on the hill. Struggling much of the early part of the season, the lefty was terrific in this game. He tossed four and two third innings of scoreless ball, to notch his second win. With Dobson on the shelf, Johnson and the other pitchers will have no choice but to step up now.

It was a very successful road trip for Boston, who went 10-3. They now open a 17 game home stand at Fenway Park.

With Stobbs throwing in this game, and tomorrow an off day, the starting rotation will be tweaked as follows, Mickey McDermott will take the 1 spot, followed by Mel Parnell, then Ellis Kinder and finally, Masterson.
