DESPITE 3 HR’S FROM VERN STEPHENS, YANKS STAY ALIVE WITH 9-8 WIN
Vern Stephens tied the Stratball record for an individual hitting home runs in a game, with 3, but despite that, the New York Yankees, clung to hope in the pennant race by defeating Boston, 9-8.
A key moment in the game came when Bobby Doerr made an error on a batted ball by opposing pitcher, Eddie Lopat, in the fifth inning. That allowed the inning to continue, eventually loading the bases. At that point, Tommy Heinrich belted a grand slam. After five innings, New York led, 7-3.
Boston kept chipping away, scoring a run in the sixth, seventh and three in the eighth. However, the Yankees got a run in the top of the eighth, then another, which proved to be the winning run, when Bobby Brown doubled and later scored off reliever, Chuck Stobbs, in the top of the ninth.
There was a total of seven home runs in the game, three by the New York Yankees(two by Tommy Heinson, one by Hank Bauer) and four by the Boston Red Sox(three by Stephens(30,31, 32) and one by Bobby Doerr(22).
Frank Quinn(11-7) took the loss. The Clubs meet again today.
There was only one other game in the American League. Detroit beat Cleveland, 8-5.
