FRIEND, MIZELL LEAD BUCS TO TWINBILL SWEEP; PIRATES-CUBS SPLIT SERIES

After dropping the first two games of a four game series, the Pirates swept a double header to split their latest series with Chicago.

Bob Friend(8-3) and Vinegar Bend Mizell(8-3) each staked a claim as Pittsburgh’s best pitcher, winning 6-4 and 3-0, respectively.

Friend chipped in with the bat, singling and scoring a run in the opener, while Bob Skinner’s two run triple sparked the offense.

In game two, Mizell, on just two days rest, was incredible. He tossed a three hit shutout, fanning six, while issuing zero walks. Mizell set down the final 13 batters he faced.

Geno Cimoli and Joe Christopher contributed off the bench.

The San Francisco Giants come to Forbes Field next, for a three game series.

Other National League scores: Cincinnati 10, San Francisco 4; Los Angeles 6 Milwaukee 3; Philadelphia 3, 3 St. Louis 2, 4.
