TOM CHENEY COMES UP BIG IN 5-1, SPOT START WIN FOR PIRATES

Tom Cheney(2-4) went seven strong innings, allowing just one hit on four runs. His effort allowed the bullpen some much needed rest and also gave Harvey Haddix, the Bucs next starter, an extra day of rest.

Dick Schofield gave Dick Groat a break, holding down the shortstop post and getting a double and two singles. Bill Mazeroski tripled, but it was Gene Baker’s two out, two run single in the seventh, that clinched the game for Pittsburgh.

Other National League scores: Milwaukee 5 Chicago 3; Philadelphia 2 Los Angeles 0; Cincinnati 10 St. Louis 4.
