BILLY O’DELL SPINS 4 HIT SHUTOUT AS GIANTS TAKE LAST GAME OF SERIES, 1-0
Billy O’Dell and the San Francisco Giants whitewashed Pittsburgh, 1-0, to win the final game of a three game series.
It certainly was a hard luck loss for Tom Cheney(2-6) in a spot start role. Cheney, who usually goes around five innings in a game, tossed a full eight innings, allowing only one run, on five hits, himself.
The Giants got their lone run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Willie Mays singled, then advanced to second on a groundout. Cheney then uncorked a wild pitch, sending Mays to third. Jim Davenport then stroked a clean single, plating Willie with the games only run.
Cheney kept San Francisco off the board after that, but Pittsburgh was unable to score against O’Dell, twice getting Dick Stuart to second base, but stranding him there each time.
The Bucs could have used a win, for Milwaukee was in Chicago, beating the Cubs twice in a double header.
Next on the slate for Pittsburgh is a three game set against the second place St. Louis Cardinals.
Other National League games: Milwaukee 7, 1 Chicago 5, 0; St. Louis 6 Cincinnati 5; Los Angeles 9 Philadelphia 0.
