PIRATE OFFENSE COMES UP BIG IN VERNON LAW’S BRILLIANT EFFORT
The Pittsburgh Pirates put up 9 runs against the Cardinals, more than they have scored against a team in over 25 days, while Vernon Law(9-4) spun one of his best games of the year in a 9-1 Pirates win.
Law pitched a complete game, three hitter, narrowly missing a shutout, when he surrendered a home run to Stan Musial, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Law’s fifth complete game of the season.
Vernon helped out at bat as well, as he(1) and Bill Virdon(7) belted back to back homers in the top of the eighth. Smokey Burgess had a double and a pair of singles, scoring three times. Don Hoak added two hits and a sacrifice fly.
Other National League scores: Cincinnati 6 Chicago 5. Only games scheduled.
