SIMMONS BEATS FRIEND IN 2-1 PITCHER’S DUEL
Bob Friend(10-6) lost a tough game to Curt Simmons of the Cardinals. Despite allowing only four hits, the Pirates fell to St. Louis, 2-1. Simmons gave up one run on six hits to Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals struck first, getting both runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joe Cunningham singled, then Bill White drew a walk. A single by Stan Musial knocked in one run, then after Darryl Spencer lined out to third, Carl Sawatski hit a sacrifice fly on which White scored.
Pittsburgh would answer the next inning when Don Hoak(14) hit a solo homerun, but that was all they could muster.
The series concludes today, with Vinegar Bend Mizell facing Ray Sadecki.
