FRIDAY, AUG 26TH TO SUNDAY, AUG 28TH. GM#’S 123-125 BUSCH STADIUM, ST. LOUIS
Things could not have gone any better for the Pittsburgh Pirates as they swept the St. Louis Cardinals three straight and now have sole possession of first place in the National League. The red hot Bucs have won seven in a row. Here is the series recap:
Game one saw Harvey Haddix(10-6) win his tenth game, as he and Elroy Face combined to limit St. Louis to 2 runs on just four hits, in a 4-2 Pirates win. Bill Virdon had a double and a triple, with three rbi, to lead the offense.
The second contest saw Pittsburgh roar out to a 7-3 lead, before holding off a late Cardinal charge. The final was Pirates 8 Cardinals 6. Three run homeruns by Bob Skinner(11) and Smokey Burgess(6), provided the bulk of the scoring for the visitors. Tom Cheney(4-0) earned the win in relief of Vernon Law.
Despite surrendering two homeruns to Leon Wagner, Bob Friend(15-6) got the 4-2 win, becoming the first Pirate pitcher to crack the fifteen win plateau. Hal Smith(7) hit a two run homer, while Gino Cimoli and Dick Groat each had two hits.
Pittsburgh now heads to the Los Angeles Coliseum for two with the Dodgers, then it’s off to San Francisco, for two games against the Giants, to complete their last west coast swing of the year.
