1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

WED, AUGUST 31ST, TO THURS, SEPT 1ST. GM#’S 128, 129. CANDLESTICK PARK, S.F.

The Pirates extended their win streak to 11 games, by finishing up their road trip, (on which they went 12-2), by sweeping a short, two game set from the Giants.

The Bucs won a close, 4-3 decision in game one. They trailed 3-1 late, but then scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth, to go ahead to stay. Roberto Clemente singled in Bob Skinner with the eventual winning run in the ninth. Bill Mazeroski hit his (5th) homerun.

Clem Labine(4-0) won, to remain the only unbeaten, Pirate moundsman.

Game two was a tremendous job of pitching by Pirate ace, Bob Friend(16-6). In a tight, 2-1 win over Georges Maranda, Friend gave up the first run of the game in the bottom of the second, when Bob Schmidt singled in Felipe Alou.

After that hit, Friend retired the next 21 batters he faced, until Andre Rodgers singled in the bottom of the ninth. Willie Mays grounded out to end the ballgame, as Friend notched another complete game victory.

Now Pittsburgh heads back home, first facing the Philadelphia Phillies for two games.
