1972 Chicago White Sox Replay

SERIES #4. TWO GAMES. WON BOTH. CLEVELAND VS CHICAGO.

The White Sox won their second straight series, beating the Cleveland Indians by scores of 4-2 and 6-2.

In game one, Ed Herrmann(3) belted a game winning, two run homer in the bottom of the ninth, to win it for Chicago. Cy Acosta(2-0) won in relief. The game was tied at 2 all in the top of the ninth, when Chris Chambliss pinch hit and singled. Del Unser hit an infield single, moving Chambliss to second base. The next batter lined out, but when Alex Johnson then singled to Pat Kelly in right field. Kelly, who is not known for his throwing arm, gunned down Chambliss trying to score. Acosta then retired Gregg Nettles, setting the stage for Chicago’s dramatic finish.

A five run, fourth inning highlighted the White Sox second win. It was keyed by Dick Allen’s(4), three run clout. Kelly chipped in with three hits from the leadoff spot. Wilbur Wood(1-1) was the winning pitcher.

Next series: 3 games at Detroit against the Tigers.
