Sultans 9 Clippers 6. Rogers Hornsby and George Sisler led the offense in the Sultans, 9-5 win over the Clippers. The Rajah was a perfect 5-5 at the plate, scoring three times and knocking in a pair of runs. Sisler was 4-5, with a double and a triple. Babe Ruth also chipped in with a solo homerun. WP-Stan Coveleski(2-1) LP-Red Ruffing(2-3). HR-Babe Ruth(9).
Naturals 4 Hammers 0. Clayton Kershaw notched his first shutout win, defeating the Hammers, 4-0. It was that club’s fifth straight defeat. Kershaw scattered six hits, while fanning seven and walking two. He got offensive help from Mike Trout, who is now swinging a hot bat. Trout homered twice in the game. Yasiel Puig also went deep. WP-Clayton Kershaw(2-3). LP-Don Drysdale(1-3). HR-Mike Trout 2(5), Yasiel Puig(5).
Terrifics 6 Comets 2. The Terrifics belted three, first inning homeruns, all off starter, Robin Roberts, enroute to a 6-2 victory over the Comets. Reggie Jackson had two of the long balls, but Rod Carew had, perhaps, the best day at the dish. Carew was 4-5, with a (rare for him) homerun and three doubles. Terrifics starter, Tom Seaver, who has been plagued by homeruns allowed, gave up exactly zero, in this game. WP-Tom Seaver(2-4). LP-Robin Roberts(3-3). HR-Rod Carew(3), Reggie Jackson 2(7), Joe Morgan(4).
Mad Dogs 7 Peaches 3. The Mad Dogs have an offense which can explode at any point in a game. They proved this by breaking a 3-3 tie with the Peaches, by smashing four solo homeruns in the top of the ninth, enroute to a 7-3 win. Roberto Alomar and pinch hitter, Derek Jeter, homered off losing pitcher, Vean Gregg, while Barry Bonds and Lou Gehrig hit big flies off of Chief Bender, all in the top of the ninth inning. That power surge bailed out starter, Tom Glavine, who won his fourth straight decision. WP-Tom Glavine(4-1). LP-Vean Gregg(1-1). HR-Alex Rodriguez(5), Barry Bonds(5), Roberto Alomar(1), Derek Jeter(1), Ken Griffey Jr. 2(8); Wildfire Schulte(5).
