MAY 12 HEADLINES
CLIPPERS ROUT SULTANS
AARON HIT BY LESTER PITCH-OUT UNTIL MAY 27
JACKSON ERROR COSTLY IN TERRIFICS LOSS
Clippers 9 Sultans 1. The Sultans drew first blood, when George Sisler scored on a Roger Hornsby sacrifice fly in the first inning, but that would be it for them. The Clippers went on to a 9-1 pasting of the Sultans, behind Ted Williams, who homered and Lou Gehrig, who had three hits. WP-Mel Parnell(2-3). LP-Herb Pennock(2-4). HR-Ted Williams(12).
Hammers 9 Naturals 0. Naturals starter, Jon Lester plunked Hammers captain, Hank Aaron on the elbow, with the very first pitch of the game. Aaron left the game and will be out of action until May 27. He will be replaced in the lineup by Roberto Clemente. Vada Pinson was called up to fill out the Hammers roster. That was the bad news. The good news is that Sandy Koufax pitched his best game thus far, a two hit, 9-0 shutout. Not only was it the lefty fireballer’s first shutout, it was his first win, period. Koufax fanned 14, one short of Nolan Ryan’s Stratball record. WP-Sandy Koufax(1-3). LP-Jon Lester(2-3). HR-Willie Mays(12).
Comets 5 Terrifics 4. Reggie Jackson kicked a Warren Spahn single into three bases, allowing Carl Furillo to score the eventual winning run, as the Comets beat the Terrifics, 5-4. Norm Siebern had three hits and two rbi, while Mickey Mantle scored twice from the leadoff spot. WP-Early Wynn(1-1). LP-Fergie Jenkins(1-2).
