The Terrifics got a run in the top of the eighth and ninth innings, the latter coming on a George Foster homerun, as they defeated the top ranked Clippers, 8-6. Meanwhile, the second place Mad Dogs were splitting a twinbill with the Hammers, so the Clippers lead is down to just one and a half games. Rod Carew had three hits on the day, Foster, Joe Morgan, Reggie Jackson, Dave Concepcion and Garry Maddox all had two apiece. WP-Jim Palmer(3-2). LP-Bob Feller(7-2). The Hammers stunned the Mad Dogs by scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth, to win, 6-4. Mad Dogs starter Kevin Brown began the ninth allowing a homerun to Jim Gentile. Brown gave way to Pedro Martinez, who walked Ron Santo, allowed a double by Willie Mays, who was playing left field for the B teamers and then issued another free pass to Del Crandall, loading the bases. Cookie Rojas hit a fly ball to Ken Griffey, Jr., in centerfield. Santo tried to score and was gunned down at the plate. With two on, Willie McCovey then blasted a pinch hit, walkoff homerun, to win the game. Griffey, who played in both games and homered in both, is climbing up the leaderboard. There were a total of seven homeruns in this game, with three players hitting their first of the year. WP-Sam McDowell(4-3). LP-Pedro Martinez(6-5).
