GAME RECAPS:
Clippers 10 Mad Dogs 2
The Clippers took the first game of a four game series in decisive fashion, by obliterating the Mad Dogs, 10-2.
The Mad Dogs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, on homeruns by Andrew Jones and Alex Rodriguez. The Clippers halved that lead with a run in the third inning. From that point, it was all Clippers, as they put up crooked numbers in the fifth and seventh innings, scoring three runs and four runs, respectively.
Stan Musial paced the onslaught, belting a pair of homers and a triple, as part of a six rbi day. Lou Gehrig and Ted Williams also hit long balls. Even winning pitcher, Dizzy Dean got in on the act, bopping a solo shot in his first at bat. WP-Dizzy Dean(11-6). LP-Roger Clemens(11-3). HR-Andrew Jones(23), Alex Rodriguez(22); Stan Musial 2(28), Lou Gehrig(28), Ted Williams(31), Dizzy Dean(2).
Hammers 8 Sultans 6.
Home run leader, Babe Ruth clubbed a pair of round trippers, extending his league lead to 38, but that wasn’t enough to win, as the Hammers pulled out an 8-6 win. Somewhat surprisingly, it was the Babe’s first multi homer game this year.
The Hammers put up a five spot in the fifth, all runs unearned, thanks to a Pie Traynor error. Roger Maris belted a pinch hit homerun, his second in as many games. WP-Juan Marichal(6-6). LP-Herb Pennock(7-9). HR-Babe Ruth 2(38), Tris Speaker(6); Hank Aaron(27), Roger Maris(2)
Peaches 7 Terrifics 3.
Rube Waddell earned the win for the Peaches, as he and Walter Johnson combined to limit the Terrifics to just three runs(all unearned) on five hits. Meanwhile, the Peaches had 14 baseknocks on the day. WP-Rube Waddell(6-10). LP-Bob Gibson(8-8). HR-Mike Schmidt(27); Wildfire Schulte(17).
Comets 7 Naturals 3.
Mickey Mantle was on base all five times up, tallying a double, two singles and two walks, to lead the Comets past the Nats, 7-3. Whitey Ford earned the win, working six stanzas, while Bob Turley tossed three innings of scoreless relief. WP-Whitey Ford(8-8). LP-Justin Verlander(7-7). HR-Gil Hodges(10)
