1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM#13 APRIL 20, 1971 VS ATLANTA BRAVES

BUCS OPEN 12 GAME HOMESTAND WITH 10-1 LAUGHER OVER BRAVES

It’s not often that the Pirates put up ten runs without hitting a home run, but that was the case yesterday, as Pittsburgh routed the Atlanta Braves, 10-1, to begin a twelve game homestand.

Atlanta knuckleballer, Phil Niekro was chased after just one and one third innings, having allowed five runs in that span. Manny Sanguillen was 3-3, with a double and four runs batted in. Dave Cash and Richie Hebner each scored three runs. Those two players , along with Sangy and Vic Davallilo all had three hits apiece.

Bob Moose went six innings to earn the win. Sonny Jackson was on base all four times up, with three singles and a walk. However, he was unable to score at all. Ironically, the only run Atlanta scored was by Niekro himself, in the third inning. The Braves pitchers walked to start the inning, moved to third on a Jackson single, then came home when Ralph Garr hit a sacrifice fly. WP-Moose(1-2). LP-Niekro
