ASTROS HAND BOB MILLER FIRST LOSS OF YEAR
The Houston Astros edged the Pittsburgh Pirates, 2-1, ending the unbeaten pitching run of Bob Miller, who took the loss, after allowing eighth inning doubles to Bob Watson and Johnny Edwards. Miller had a 9-0 win streak for the Bucs, all coming in relief.
Dock Ellis started for the Pirates and went six innings, leaving with the score tied 1-1. Houston scored in the bottom of the first inning, when Jesus Alou doubled. After moving to third on Joe Morgan’s infield single, he scored on a Bob Watson sacrifice fly.
Pittsburgh tied the game in the top of the third when, Jackie Hernandez singled, advanced on Ellis’ sacrifice bunt, eventually scoring on an Al Oliver double.
The score remained knotted until the Astros broke through with what would prove to be the winning run, in the bottom of the eighth. WP-Spicio Spinks. LP-Bob Miller(9-1).
