St. Louis’ Steve Carlton earned his 20th win on the year, as the Cardinals defeated the New York Mets, 5-2, to clinch the National League Eastern Division title.

Pittsburgh finally ended a six game losing streak which cost them the pennant, as they were swept down the stretch by both the Cardinals and Mets.

The Pirates defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1, behind Dock Ellis, in his final start of the season. Willie Stargell will take the home run crown, as he bashed his 46th of the year. Bob Robertson clubbed #33. WP-Dock Ellis(14-5). LP-Rick Wise. HR-Willie Stargell(46), Bob Robertson(33).

The Bucs will end their season against the Phils today. Nelson Briles is slated to toe the slab against Bill Champion.
