1971 Pittsburgh Pirates Replay

GM# 162 SEPTEMBER 30, 1971 VS PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

PIRATES END DISAPPOINTING SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE

Well, the ’71 replay is over. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the flagship of the league throughout most of the season, but a late season collapse handed the division crown to the St. Louis Cardinals.

On September 20th, Pittsburgh had a 4.5 game lead over the Cardinals. They were then swept in back to back series’, first by St. Louis and then by the New York Mets. At the same time, the Cards were on a tear, winning eight straight. They moved into first place on September 25th and ended up winning the division title by one game.

In the final game of the season, Nelson Briles tossed his third shutout, whitewashing the Phillies, 2-0. Willie Stargell tripled and scored in the top of the second and Al Oliver had a sacrifice fly in the eighth, accounting for Pittsburgh’s only runs. WP-Nelson Briles(11-9). LP-Bill Champion.
