Biz Mackey had his biggest day as an Athletic, when he slammed two home runs in one inning, one of them a grand slam, in an eleven run, fifth inning. Philadelphia would go on to win, 14-1.
The big inning started with a Buddy McCoy single, then Bob Johnson followed with a double, putting runners on second and third. Senator’s starter, Ken Chase decided to walk the dangerous, Josh Gibson, loading the bases. Mackey made them pay, with a grand slam. Chase left the game, relived by Ken Anderson. He then allowed a single to Pete Suder, walked Dick Siebert gave up another single to Al Brancato. Pitcher Joe Rogan then singled and James Bell doubled. McCoy, who began the inning, lined out to second base for the first out. Johnson hit a sacrifice fly. Gibson then homered and Mackey followed with his second blast of the inning. Finally, Suder grounded to first to end the agony for Washington.
As good as the offense was, the pitching was nearly as good. Rogan pitched a complete game, only losing his shutout bid in the ninth, and that run was unearned, because of a Brancato error.
Mackey’s seven rbi’s in one game ties a Strat house record with Dick Allen ’72 White Sox.
