PHI 4 10 0
DET 3 12 0
WP-BILL FOSTER(14-4) LP-JOHNNY GORSICA
HR-JOSH GIBSON(38), BOB JOHNSON(13), ALAN BRANCATO(1); RUDY YORK
Philadelphia defeated Detroit, 4-3, with all four runs coming as a result of home runs. Bob Johnson led off the second inning with his thirteenth. Two batters later, Al Brancato came up with Wally Moses aboard and slugged his first of the year, giving the Athletics a 3-0 lead.
Rudy York clubbed a two run shot for Detroit, in the home half of the fourth, pulling them within one run. Josh Gibson’s thirty eighth blast came in the top of the eighth, giving Philadelphia some insurance. That came in handy, as the Tigers sent starter, Bill Foster to the showers, after he allowed three straight singles, in the bottom of the eighth. Tom Ferrick came on and was able to get the next batter to hit into a twin killing, so, Detroit was only able to get the one run and so, fell short.
