1941 Philadelphia Athletics Remix

GM#147 SEPTEMBER 20, 1941 AT WASHINGTON SENATORS

ATHLETICS BLOW EARLY LEAD, LOSE TO SENATORS, 8-7; YANKS WIN, NOW 3 BACK

PHI 7 13 0

WSH 8 13 0

WP-RED ANDERSON LP-TOM FERRICK(8-8)

HR-BUCK LEONARD(20)

Philadelphia held a 7-3 lead over Washington after just three innings, but Fred Caligiuri stumbled again, allowing three more runs, in addition to the three he already gave up, before Tom Ferrick took over in the sixth. Things went no better for the Athletics receiver, who surrendered two more runs and was tagged with the loss.

Credit Washington’s bullpen, in the form of Sundra, Anderson and Kennedy. Those three did not allow a single run from the third inning on.

To make matters worse, New York defeated Boston, 8-1, to shave Philadelphia’s lead to just three games.

New York has a single game against the Red Sox on the 21st, while Philadelphia will play two against the Senators on that date.
