DIZZY DEAN BLANKS PHENOMS IN FINAL GAME OF TOUR’S 1934 LEG

PHENOMS 0

CARDINALS 2

WP- DIZZY DEAN LP-JOSE FERNANDEZ (8-3)

Dizzy Dean showed why he was a 30-game winner, by shutting down the Phenoms, 2-0, to wrap up the 1934 leg of the Barnstorming Tour.

Dean had things a bit easier than he might have ordinarily, for the Phenoms lineup was filled with substitutes, given the team’s fourteen inning marathon against the Browns yesterday. The Cardinal flamethrower scattered seven hits and struck out eight, in the win.

Phenoms starter, Jose Fernandez was every bit as good as Dean, perhaps better, until the bottom of the sixth inning. With two out, Fernandez surrendered a double to Jack Rothrock. Frank Frisch plated him with a single, then Frisch advanced on a passed ball. Ducky Medwick followed with another single, scoring Frisch, to put the Cards up, 2-0. After walking Rip Collins, Fernandez fanned Bill Delancey, to end the inning. Mark Fidrych took over on the bump and was perfect over the next two frames, however, the Phenoms could not generate any offense.
