Johnny Groth, of the ’49 Detroit Tigers, sent an eleventh inning offering from Bruce Sutter, into the seats, to give his team a 3-2 victory, over the Phenoms.
The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the third, when Johnny Lipon doubled and scored, to put Detroit up, 1-0. The Phenoms would tie it up the very next inning on a solo home run from Andre Dawson.
After Vic Wertz doubled with one out in the sixth, Johnny Groth put the Tigers up 2-1, with a single. Cal Ripken retied the game in the top of the ninth, with his 18th blast of the year. The tenth was scoreless, setting the stage for Groth’s dramatic game winner in the bottom of the eleventh inning.
