The ’68 season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start for Bob Gibson. He recorded his first win of the season, a 1-0, two hit shutout against the Atlanta Braves, in which he went the full ten innings. Gibson and Pat Jarvis traded zeroes through the first seven innings. Claude Raymond took over for the Braves and pitched the eighth and ninth, but still, no runs were scored by either team. The Cardinals had a runner in scoring position four times to this point, but were unable to cash in. Finally, in the bottom of the tenth, Raymond gave up a single to Mike Shannon. Bob Tolan was brought in to run for him. Julian Javier struck out, but Dal Maxvill singled, advancing Tolan to third base. Ron Davis then pinch hit for Gibson and hit a deep fly ball, scoring Tolan with the game winning run.
