Game #35 Recap:
Boston scratched scheduled spot-starter, Jim Lonborg, instead having Sonny Siebert make his regular start. Baltimore lodged a formal protest, saying it was an unfair advantage to have Siebert pitch against last place Pittsburgh. (The Red Sox beat the Pirates and the Orioles lost to the Twins, thus increasing Boston’s lead to three games.) It was ruled that Lonborg would make his spot start in game #36, against Baltimore’s regular starter, Tom Phoebus. The Twins are in third place alone, five games back, followed by the Yankees, in fourth place. The Reds are in a tailspin, having dropped seven straight. They are tied with the Dodgers and Athletics for fifth. Those three teams have a two-game edge on the Pirates, who are in the cellar.
Individually, Reggie Smith has relinquished the batting lead to Bobby Tolan of the Reds. Don Mincher clings to the home run lead by one, with 10, but four players are hot on his tail. Ray Culp leads in ERA for starters and in strikeouts, but Gary Peters has a two-game edge in wins. Al Oliver was caught off second base with the hidden ball trick, worked to perfection by Rico Petrocelli.
