HR- George Scott (7), Tony Conigliaro (8); Frank Robinson (5)

George Scott’s three-run clout in the top of the sixth inning, was the difference in Boston’s 5 to 2 win over Baltimore. Losing pitcher, Mike Cuellar also gave up a gopher ball to Tony Conigliaro.

Cincinnati 0 Pittsburgh 2

WP- Bob Veale (3-4) LP- Jim McGlothin (4-1)

It was the Bob Veale show in Pittsburgh. The Pirate lefty tossed a three-hit shutout, fanning a season high, 13 batters, as Pittsburgh defeated Cincinnati, 2 to 0. Because they went 12 innings or more in their last game, the Reds were forced to start and play their second stringers for at least six innings. Veale took advantage, fanning Angel Bravo and Jim Stewart, three times each.

Los Angeles 2 Oakland 7

WP- Blue Moon Odom (2-4) LP- Alan Foster (4-3)

HR- Blue Moon Odom (1); Billy Grabarkewitz (4)

This game had a lot of similarities to the Reds-Pirates game. The Athletics were forced to go with their “B” squad, but things worked out better for them. They beat the Dodgers, 7 to 2. Steve Hovley was 4 for 5 from the leadoff spot, while Odom helped his own cause with a solo homer in the bottom of the third.

Minnesota 3 New York 4

WP- Jack Aker (2-1) LP- Ron Perranowski (2-2)

HR- Roy White (6)

The Yankees snatched victory from defeat, stunning the Twins by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth, to beat Minnesota, 4 to 3. Steve Barber took over for Twins’ starter, Bert Blyleven, who held a 3 to 1 lead. Barber pitched a clean eighth, but gave up a single to John Ellis, then walked Ron Woods. The Twins elected to go with Perranowski, who surrendered a rbi double to pinch hitter, Danny Cater, putting runners on second and third. Gene Michael lined out, but Ron Hansen stroked a rbi single, tying the game at three. With runners on first and third, Roy White hit a deep fly to bring in Cater with the winning tally.

Game #43 Recap:

The Red Sox won the big showdown with the Orioles and now those two teams are tied for first place. Baltimore and Boston will meet one more time before season’s end. After that, there is separation. Minnesota is in second place alone, despite dropping their fourth straight game. Next come the Yankees, riding a three-game win streak, in third, to round out the first division. Cincinnati and Oakland are tied for fourth, while Los Angeles is in fifth and Pittsburgh in sixth, seven and eight games back, respectively. The Reds and Athletics both had their reserves playing, the Reds lost, the Athletics won.

On an individual basis. Bobby Tolan holds down the batting lead and is now at .364. Cesar Tovar went 0 fer, to drop .008, while Rod Carew went from .331 to .343. Danny Cater (.317) and Tony Perez (.315), broke into the top five.

The Home Run race is still led by Don Mincher with 12, a two-homer lead over his closest competitor. Wes Parker added one to his doubles lead with 17. Pitching is pretty much unchanged. I believe Bob Veale’s 13 strikeouts is the most in a game this season, I will double check that.
