1970 Great Eight League

Team Breakdowns Boston Red Sox

31W 25L .554 Pct Second Place

A season of what could have been, the Red Sox held down the top spot in the league from Game #1 to Game #39. A slump down the stretch and the Orioles hot streak cost them the pennant. They did have the longest win streak, with an eight game strecth.

Power was a big part of Boston’s game, with four players in double figures in homeruns. (Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli, 12 each; Tony Conigliaro 11 and Carl Yastrzemski 10). Smith was a strong candidate for MVP, slashing .317/.340/.555, along with Yaz, who got off to a slow start, but came on to slash, .294/.417/.505.

On the pitching side of things, the Red Sox boasted two of the league’s top hurlers. Ray Culp (6-3, 2.20ERA, 1.16WHIP, 97K, 25BB, 5CG, 4SHO) and Gary Peters (9-3, 2.89ERA, 1.22WHIP, 79K, 29BB, 3CG, 2SHO). Culp was named Pitcher of the Year and Peters had the most wins in the league with nine. Their two best relievers were Sparky Lyle, who posted six saves, while Gary Wagner saved three games.
