Oakland 3 Baltimore 2
WP- Bob Locker (1-2) LP- Mike Cuellar (2-1) SV- Mudcat Grant (1)
HR- Gene Tenace (5), Felipe Alou (1)
This game turned into a gut-wrenching loss for Baltimore’s Mike Cuellar, who looked poised for a complete game win. The Orioles led, 2 to 0, when Gene Tenace tagged Cuellar for a solo blast in the top of the fifth. The Baltimore starter recovered and pitched scoreless ball until the top of the ninth. Then disaster struck. Bert Campaneris singled and was sacrificed to second by Joe Rudi. Felipe Alou then pinch-hit for a hitless, Rick Monday and sent Cuellar’s first offering into the seats for a, 3 to 2, Athletics lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Mudcat Grant gave up a single to Frank Robinson, but got Boog Powell to pop out. Brooks Robinson then hit into a game ending double play, as Oakland notched the 3 to 2 win. On the other side, Blue Moon Odom walked five batters in four innings but allowed just one run.
