Pittsburgh upset Boston, thanks to Richie Hebner’s, two-run clout in the bottom of the eighth inning and went on to win, 3 to 2.

Cincinnati 7 Oakland 0

WP- Wayne Simpson (2-3) LP- Diego Segui (4-2)

Wayne Simpson pitched a shutout and the Reds put up seven runs against the Athletics. Johnny Bench and Tony Perez each doubled twice and together, drove in five of the Reds’ seven runs, in the 7 to 0 victory.

Los Angeles 2 New York 4

WP- Steve Kline (4-1) LP- Joe Moeller (1-3) SV- Jack Aker (5)

HR- Roy White 2 (5), Bobby Murcer (4); Tom Haller (2)

Roy White hit a pair of homers, in leading the Yankees to a 4 to 2 win over the Dodgers. Bobby Murcer also went deep as did Tom Haller for L. A.

Minnesota 3 Baltimore 1

WP- Bill Zepp (3-2) LP- Tom Phoebus (0-4) SV- Steve Barber (2)

Paul Ratliff hit a pinch-hit, two-run double in the sixth, which turned out to be the winning run, in a 3 to 2 victory over the Orioles. Zepp allowed no runs and just two hits, in five innings pitched.

Game 28 Recap:

We’ve reached the halfway point of the season. Boston continues to hold on to first place. Baltimore had a chance to tie, but lost to the Twins, while the Red Sox were upset by the Pirates. The Yankees and Twins are in the middle of the pack, but are the hottest teams, having each won three straight. The Dodgers currently have the longest losing streak at three games.

Reggie Jackson had tied Johnny Bench for the home run lead with 8. Three other players are right behind with seven. Reggie Smith still leads the league in batting, but Cesar Tovar is second. He is also second in hits and is the front runner in runs, triples and stolen bases.
