Oakland had to use five pitchers, but was able to edge Baltimore, 5 to 1. Don Mincher homered for the Athletics.

Boston 8 Minnesota 5

HR- Carl Yastrzemski (5), Rico Petrocelli (6)

Yaz, Petrocelli and Billy Conigliaro led the Red Sox in a 17 hit, 8 to 5 victory over the Minnesota Twins. It was a rough day for Reggie Smith, who went 0 for 6.

Cincinnati 1 Los Angeles 18

WP- Claude Osteen (1-3) LP- Jim Merritt (1-4)

The Dodgers set a new high for runs scored in a game, with an 18 to 1 pasting of the Cincinnati Reds. Their 22 hits is also a high mark. Interestingly, there were no home runs hit, however, both teams combined for 13 doubles.

Pittsburgh 3 New York 2

WP- Luke Walker (1-0) LP- Mel Stottlemyer (2-4) John Lamb (1)

Luke Walker of the Pirates earned his first win in the Great Eight League, with a 3 to 2, spot-start win over the New York Yankees. Matty Alou singled and tripled and scored twice for Pittsburgh.

Game #30 Recap:

Boston has opened up a three-game advantage over Baltimore and Cincinnati, who are tied for second place. Minnesota and New York are tied for third, with L.A., Oakland and Pittsburgh running out the string. The Pirates are still in last place but have a three-game win streak going. The Dodgers set a new benchmark for runs by putting up eighteen against the Reds.

As far as individuals, Reggie Smith still leads the league in batting average, though his 0fer day against Twins dropped him to .361. Oakland’s Don Mincher is the new home run leader, with 9 circuit clouts. Gary Peters of the Red Sox in the league’s first six game winner. Luke Walker won his spot start opportunity for the Pirates, filling in for Steve Blass.
