Game #31 Recap:
The Red Sox remain in first place, dropping back to a two-game advantage over the Orioles, who are in sole possession of second place. The Reds, Twins and Yankees are tied for third place. The Dodgers are all alone in fourth, while the Athletics and Pirates are tied for fifth. The Pirates are the hottest team, riding a four-game winning streak. The Reds have dropped three in a row.
Individually, Minnesota’s George Mitterwald becomes the first player in the Great Eight League to hit three home runs in one game. All the more incredible, because he had not hit one previously this season. Johnny Bench tied Don Mincher for the home run lead with nine. The rest of the leaderboard looks pretty much the same. Boston pitcher, Gary Peters is vying for the pitching triple crown. He is leading in win and strikeouts and is second in ERA among starters.
