Boston edged Cincinnati, 6 to 5. Sparky Lyle allowed a solo home run by Tony Perez in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull the Reds to within one run but then retired three batters in a row to close it out.

New York 2 Baltimore 3 Twelve innings

Boog Powell hit two sacrifice flies, one of them the game winner in the bottom of the twelfth inning, as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 3 to 2, in an extra inning battle.

Oakland 5 Minnesota 4

HR- Gene Tenace (6) gs.

A grand slam by Oakland’s Gene Tenace capped a five run, first inning for the Athletics, who then held on to beat the Twins, 5 to 4.

Pittsburgh 6 Los Angeles 5

Al Oliver and Dave Cash had three hits apiece for the Pirates who nipped the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6 to 5.

Game #32 Recap:

Boston maintains their lead on first place and becomes the first team to reach the 20 wins plateau. Baltimore is in sole possession of second place, while Cincinnati, Minnesota and New York are tied for third, all playing .500 ball. Los Angeles, Oakland and Pittsburgh are all tied for fourth place, with 14-18 records. Pittsburgh’s winning streak is at five games; Cincinnati has lost four in a row. All four of today’s games were won by just one run.

On an individual note, Gene Tenace hit just the second grand slam of the season for the Athletics. Reggie Smith is still leading the batting race, though Bobby Tolan is closing the gap. Johnny Bench and Don Mincher are still tied for the home run lead. Gary Peters is still leading in pitching wins and strikeouts but has dropped to third in ERA (among starters).
