Baltimore scored twice in the top of the ninth to break a three all tie and a big reason for that was Dodger third baseman, Billy Grabarkawitz’s second error of the day. That led to a pair of unearned runs off of Jim Brewer as the Orioles beat the Dodgers, 5 to 3.

Boston 4 New York 0

WP- Gary Peters (8-1) LP- Mel Stottlemyer (2-5)

Gary Peters showed why he is one of, if not the best, pitcher in the Great Eight League. He scattered seven hits in a 4-0 shutout of the Yankees as he collected his league leading eighth win.

Cincinnati 2 Minnesota 4

WP- Jim Katt (3-2) LP- Jim Merritt (1-6) SV- Steve Barber (3)

HR- Brant Alyea 2(9)

Brant Alyea was the star for the Twins, belting a pair of two-run home runs, in a 4-2 win over the Reds. Jim Katt went seven innings in the win, while it was another tough loss for Cincinnati’s Jim Merritt who allowed both homers.

Pittsburgh 5 Oakland 3

It was a 5 to 3, come from behind win, for Pittsburgh over Oakland. Trailing, 2-1, heading into the eighth, the Pirates first two batters were quickly retired by Jim Roland, who took over for starter, Chuck Dobson. Trouble came quickly, though, as Sanguillen singled, Clemente walked and Al Oliver was hit with a pitch, loading the bases. With Bob Robertson coming up, Oakland went to Mudcat Grant. The Athletics closer lost the battle, by allowing a grand slam on the first pitch to Robbie. Dave Giusti was called on to work the ninth and made things interesting by surrendering a home run to Frank Fernandez and later in the inning, a double to Rick Monday, but in the end, was able to notch the save chance.

Game #38 Recap:

The Orioles and Red Sox both won, so Boston’s lead remains at two games. The Twins are in third place and are the league’s hottest team, with four straight wins. The Reds and Yankees are tied for fourth. The Dodgers and Athletics are tied for fifth, and the Pirates are in last place.

Individually, Bobby Tolan continues to lead the league in batting average, while Don Mincher holds onto his home run lead. Brant Alyea’s two long balls put him in the race with 9 total. Bob Robertson’s grand slam was the fourth in the league so far this season. Boston’s Reggie Smith has been a bit quiet lately but is still among the leaders in five separate categories, while leading outright in two. Gary Peters continues to impress with his second shutout and his league leading, eighth win.
