The Orioles embarrassed the Yankees in the House That Ruth Built, with an 11 run, 14 hit, shellacking. Mike Cuellar pitched a solid, seven innings, even helping his own cause with a solo home run. Paul Blair, Merv Rettenmund and Brooks Robinson each had three hits in the onslaught.

Cincinnati 9 Boston 6

The Reds scored six runs over the final three innings, to upset the first-place Red Sox, 9 to 6. Boston starter, Sonny Siebert gave up a two- run homer to Pete Rose in the top of the seventh and that seemed to spark Cincinnati.

Los Angeles 5 Pittsburgh 6

Roberto Clemente won it for the Pirates in the bottom of the ninth, by hitting a ball into the gap, splitting the Dodger defenders, as Manny Sanguillen raced around the bases with the winning run, in Pittsburgh’s 6 to 5 thriller over Los Angeles.

Minnesota 7 Oakland 4

Oakland led this game, 4 to 2, heading into the top of the ninth, but their bullpen imploded, giving up five runs, as the Twins shocked the Athletics, 7 to 4.

Game #39 Recap:

Baltimore’s win and Boston’s loss means the Orioles have closed to within one game of the Red Sox. Keep an eye on the red-hot Twins, who have won five straight. They are now two games behind Boston and just one game behind the Orioles. Cincinnati and New York round out the first division, tied with records of 18 and 20.

Individually, Bob Tolan of the Reds continues to lead the league in batting. He raised his average to .353. Tolan also leads in hits, with 53 and stolen bases, with 9. Don Mincher retains his lead in home runs at 11. Bert Campaneris of the Athletics is the new leader in runs scored, with 28. Dodger reliever, Pete Mikkelsen’s ERA is now over 1.00, after struggling against the Pirates. Should be a good battle coming up in the Oakland at New York game. Diego Segui against Steve Kline. Gm# 40 is a spot start for Cincinnati. Tony Cloninger will pitch instead of Wayne Simpson.
